Sustainability is the best policy

At the “Bergbahnen Sölden” mountain lift company sustainability is a huge priority as nature and the surrounding resources form the basis of Sölden’s prospering ski tourism on the slopes. With three examples provided by Bergbahnen Sölden, this article will give you a detailed insight into the wide range of ecological facts that guarantee environmental-friendly measures in perfect tune with nature.

ice Q

The scenic gourmet restaurant beyond 3000 meters above sea level is not only a true eye-catcher but also a highly energy-saving landmark. Huge glass facades increase the amount of passive energy recovery from natural sources – a method applied also for winter gardens.

By buffering the harvested energy, it can be used afterwards for intelligent room heating (or cooling) systems. Also the heat produced by all cooling devices at the ice Q is fed into the heating plant for re-using energy that seemed lost.

Renaturation of ski slopes

Building a new ski run can be quite significant to the area’s natural environs – therefore Bergbahnen Sölden do their very best to repair any possible environmental impact. The slope is covered with a 20 cm thick layer of humus right after constructing a new ski run, then the ski trail is planted with Alpine grass.

A special blend is required for reactivating the soil, comprising manure, peat, compactor and water. What’s more, different grass seed is used according to the altitude of the ski slope. But also already existing ski runs are treated sporadically in the same way. The local farmers provide enough manure and dung.

Shuttle service for employees

No less than 10 shuttle cars of different sizes take the mountain lift workers and employees up to their workplace safely – and back again. About 100 people every day during the summer months and up to daily 160 workers in the winter season.

A sample calculation: if two workers shared a private car to reach their workplace, between 50 and 80 additional cars would use the valley’s federal road per day. Thanks to the shuttle bus service of Bergbahnen Sölden there are only 10 cars in all.
